With this sample set, undisturbed samples can be taken in soft soils to a depth of 2 metres with a diameter of 53 millimetres, provided there are no rocks in its way. Suitable for sampling on the surface, in auger holes or in profile pits, above as well as under groundwater level. There are also two other types of sets available with a different ring size.
The physical properties of soils are largely determined in the laboratory. Such studies usually require undisturbed soil samples, preferably with uniform dimensions. To meet these requirements, soil samples are taken in rings of a known volume and diameter.
Royal Eijkelkamp soil sample rings are made of seamless stainless-steel tube, smooth inside and out for as less as possible friction. The bottom of the ring has a cutting edge. The Tensiometer Tube - an inexpensive tube filled with water. It has a porous ceramic tip at the bottom and a rubber stopper in the top (see diagram). This tube is installed into the ground where you want to measure the soil moisture.
The auge - a very accurate electronic vacuum gauge. This is used to measure the vacuum (or suction) at the top of the tubes. The Standard Gauge (Model SST101G) reads the vacuum in the tensiometer tube. You note down the readings and add this to your plots of soil moisture. The Computer Gauge (Model SST102G) stores readings along with the tube ID. time and date. This is downloaded to your PC using the Moisture Plot software, supplied with the gauge.
The System - A complete system consists of several monitoring sites around the area to be irrigated. Each site needs two or three tubes of different lengths. This allows for the monitoring of soil moisture at various depths and movement of moisture through the soil during the irrigation cycle. Tensiometers results are read and recorded regularly. Graphed figures from each tube provide an accurate picture of soil moisture.

The wet sieving apparatus is used to determine aggregate stability. Wet aggregate stability is determined on the principle that unstable aggregates will break down more easily when immersed into water than stable aggregates. 8 sieves (with 60 mesh screen) are filled with a certain amount of soil aggregates and placed in a can filled with water. The can moves up and down for a fixed time. The unstable aggregates will fall apart, pass through the sieve, and are collected in the water-filled can underneath the sieve.
After this fixed time, the cans are removed and replaced by new water-filled cans. Now, all aggregates are destroyed. Sand grains and plant roots will remain on the sieve and only aggregates are considered. After drying the cans with the aggregates, the weight of both stable and unstable aggregates can be determined.
Dividing the weight of stable aggregates over total aggregate weight gives an index for the aggregate stability.

Field measurement and calculation of the unsaturated hydraulic conductivity K(h) using Hood Infiltrometer (Umwelt Geräte Technik, GmbH.): The Hood Infiltrometer IL-2700 is a device used for determination of saturated and unsaturated hydraulic conductivities in-situ. Compared to other Infiltrometer designs (e.g. Perroux and White, 1988; Ankeny et al, 1991; Vandervaere et al., 1997; Špongrová et al., 2009 and others), infiltrating water is in direct contact with the infiltration surface, there is no need for any contact material, and only cutting the vegetation cover to the approx. 5 mm height is needed. The contact material creates an additional layer, which can affect the infiltration process and makes the subsequent data analysis more complicated.

Proven first-principles method based on fundamental physics
The WP4C is so accurate, it’s used to calibrate other measurement methods and has been published extensively. Why? The dew point sensor inside the WP4C is a primary measure of water potential, not some secondary parameter merely correlated with water potential. It measures the combined matric and osmotic potential using fundamental thermodynamics and a finely-tuned calibration. Here’s how it works:
The WP4C determines the relative humidity of the air above a sample in a sealed chamber (conforms to ASTM D6836). Once the sample comes into equilibrium with the vapor, relative humidity is determined using the chilled mirror method. This involves chilling a tiny mirror until dew starts to form. At the dew point, the WP4C measures both mirror and sample temperature within 0.001 °C. This allows for unparalleled accuracy in the -0.1 MPa to -300 MPa range so you can have full confidence in sample readings.
